Saint James Power Station
Come late 2006, the 80-year-old Saint James Power Station (The almost-forgotten 1920s heritage of St James Power Station, the first power station in Singapore with its rich history and significant role as a strategic power supply house in the early 1900s) will be transformed into the largest multi-concept entertainment hub after a $30 million overhaul. The defunct 76,000 sq ft power station which has a distinctive red-brick facade and two chimneys. It was shut down in 1962 due to frequent breakdowns and its inability to generate sufficient electricity. Gazetted a conservation project, St James will complete the redevelopment of the whole area which includes the nearby VivoCity, Singapore’s largest mall.
Saint James Power Station will be a place for food, dancing, music or just chilling out, it can house up to 5,000 people at once in the three restaurants and nine clubs. This includes the biggest sports bar in Singapore. But best of all, the place is being touted as a truly 24-hour operation. Joint venture Vendetta Bar Pte Ltd where Nightspot veteran Dennis Foo and retailer F J Benjamin will operate the former power station as a mega entertainment centre. This is the second such partnership between the two parties, following Devils Bar at Orchard Parade Hotel.
