Four Giant hypermarkets were opened in Singapore, bringing "Big Variety, Great Value" to customers. Following the successful Giant retail format in Malaysia, the emphasis of the stores is on Ethnic and Fresh. Giant offers a wide range of local merchandise and a wet market environment. Fresh local fruits, vegetables and seafood are offered daily to customers.

Owned by the Dairy Farm International Group, Giant joins the Hongkong-based food and drugstore retailer´s stable of more than 320 retail outlets here. These include 23 Cold Storage and eight G´value supermarkets, 151 7-Eleven convenience stores, 93 Guardian pharmacies and 40 Photo Finish outlets. Dairy Farm is an international retail and wholesale group headquartered in Hong Kong that is focused on the Asia Pacific Region. The group has companies in nine countries from China through to New Zealand. It operates 1,352 stores, including supermarkets, convenience stores and drugstores, and employs 45,600 people. In 1997, Dairy Farm reported sales of US $6.9 billion.
