kino store frontIn 1927, Moichi Tanabe opened a bookstore with five employees at Shinjuku 3-chome, Tokyo, a two-story wood-built store with sales floor space of only 125m2 (1,349sq.ft.) and an art gallery on the 2nd floor.  But in 1945 the store burnt down in Allied air raid and reopened in December 1945 as a two-story wood-built store with a total floor space of 495m2 (5,328sq.ft.) and an art gallery on the 2nd floor newly built.  1983 saw the Kinokuniya expansion into Asia with the opening Kinokuniya's first Singapore store in Liang Court which also served as a base for developing additional Asian outlets.  Kinokuniya also opened several bookstores in Asia - Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. In 1996, we launched our first outlet in Oceania, in Sydney, Australia.  And in 1999 grow its presents in Singapore when it opened its main "big" store in Ngee Ann City.   The current Kinokuniya line of business is in Sales of Japanese and foreign books, journals (including electronic journals), magazines, CD-ROMs, audio-visual software, stationery, and educational and library equipment / systems; electronic information services; publishing; production of audio-visual software; production of bibliographic databases; management of theaters and an art gallery.
