Singapore Turf Club
1842 saw the formation of the Singapore Sporting Club by a group of racing enthusiasts. The Singapore racecourse at Kranji in the northern part of Singapore occupies a land area of 81.2 hectares. It is a racecourse designed for champions. The best features from leading racecourses around the world have been incorporated into its design. Located about 20 kilometres from the city, the racecourse is linked by excellent expressways and a mass rapid transit system from all parts
of Singapore.
The four-storey Grandstand is the architectural centrepiece of the new racecourse, with a unique roof structure inspired by the graceful and powerful image of a horse in motion. Up to 30,000 racegoers can be accommodated. Special fabric canopies shade racegoers from the weather as they enjoy the unobstructed views of the horses on parade. There is also a large outdoor screen so those at the Parade Ring can watch the races from there. Horses enter the main track via a unique glass-sided horsewalk that links the parade ring to the tracks. The 2 kilometer long and 31 metres wide left-handed oval-shaped sand-based racetrack is turfed with El-Toro Zoysia, a grass patented by the University of California and is reinforced with netlon fibres. Extensive tests and trials have shown that El-Toro Zoysia gives an excellent cushion and is ideal for galloping. Given the high rainfall in Singapore, the track’s sand base will prevent water logging and will provide a good racing surface throughout the year. An ideal camber on the home turns and a slight incline on the 400 metres home straight will make exciting finishes a regular feature at the Singapore racecourse
