Hotel Phoenix checked out its last guest on Wednesday after 35 years in operation on 1 August 2007.  All of its 147 staff was retrenched.  It is not known if the landmark at Somerset Road will still be a hotel after refurbishment as its owner, OCBC, has yet to reveal its new plans.
