Tampines is one, and also the first, of the four regional centres to be developed under Singapore's long range concept plan. Tampines Town is therefore the largest HDB town with some 61,000 flats. "Tampines" is named after a tree which was found in abundance in the area.  It was in Tampines that the precinct concept was first applied. There are nine neighbourhoods with each neighbourhood divided into eight to twelve precincts. Each precinct comprises five to nine apartment blocks of flats providing a closer sense of community living and belonging.

As a regional centre, Tampines Town is well endowed with various facilities including the Regional Centre offices, a telecommunication centre, Sports Complex and Changi General Hospital. Two major private shopping centres, Tampines Mall and Century Square, are located at the town centre. There is a 16-hectare industrial park in the area. Temasek Polytechnic and Tampines Junior College are also within the town.  Tampines Town won the prestigious United Nations World Habitat Award 1991 for it innovative efforts in resolving the housing situation in a town.
