Singapore 63 - Jurong, Tuas

Tuas used to be a swamp land which was later cleared for squatter settlement. It became a popular fishing village. In the old days, it was not unusual to see about 200 fishing boats in Tuas every morning.  The foundation stone of the first factory, the National Iron & Steel Mills was laid down in the emerging industrial estate on 1 September 1962. It marked the birthplace of large-scale industrialisation in Singapore. The early industries included timber/sawmilling, oil-rig fabrication, shipbuilding and repair. The industrial estate was critical in providing jobs to meet the problem of high unemployment following Singapore's independence.  Today, Jurong continues to play a significant role in the country's economy by providing the conducive environment for the manufacturing sector. The early industries, except for timber/sawmilling, still continue to thrive there. Industries in electronics, metal fabrication, pharmaceuticals and petrolchemicals were also introduced and encouraged in the estate.
