Singapore 64 - Jurong West, Lakeside, Boon Lay
In the 1950s, Jurong West was mainly swamp land with low hills, shrubs and a jungle. It was eventually developed into an industrial base in the 1960s, supported by low-cost housing. To encourage workers to live in the Jurong Town, amenities such as government dispensary, private hospital, creche, food centres and a sport complex cum swimming pool were built in the 70s. Other facilities such as drive-in and free-standing cinemas were introduced in the housing estate. Banks were also built to support the businesses in the industrial estate. Boon Lay & Pioneer Area forms part of the Jurong Industrial Estate which is the industrial heartland of Singapore. From a swampy jungle which many had called a "lost region" in the early 1960s, the Boon Lay & Pioneer Area has been transformed into a bustling industrial centre.
