Dutch Square

Famous for its red-painted buildings, the Dutch Square is clear testimony of Dutch masonry and architectural skills. The Stadthuys, situated in the Square, is believed to have been completed in 1650 and was home to the Dutch governors. Now, it has become the Malacca Historical Museum. Also within the vicinity is Queen Victoria`s fountain which was erected in 1901 to commemorate the Queen`s Diamond Jubilee. Next to it is the Malacca Clock Tower, built in 1886 by Tan Jiak Kim.

Find it in the walls, the doors and windows, the iron hinges and floral-engraved wooden ceiling. The Dutch might have kept offices and/or residences here, and the size of the building indicates that it was also a town hall. As a point of interest, the windmill outside was not imported and the exterior used to be white.

Under the same roof, the Historic Museum and the Ethnography Museum showcase antique European and Chinese furniture, traditional bridal costumes, porcelain, jewellery and other artefacts.
